Alabama Media Group Wins Online Journalism Award for Collaborating on Police Dog Bite Series

Alabama Media Group and three other news outlets were announced as Online Journalism Award Winners for Excellence in Collaboration and Partnerships for their year-long investigation into police dog bites.

“Mauled: When Police Dogs are Weapons”, a project of Alabama Media Group, The Marshal Project, The Indianapolis Star and the Indivisible Institute, was recognized Friday by the OJAs in a category demonstrating “creativity and innovation through a partnership which resulted in exceptional results “. The series had previously won several awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting and the White House Correspondents Association Award for Investigative Journalism.

“We are honored to have this recognition – this work was truly a collaboration and a partnership,†said Kelly Ann Scott, vice president of content for Alabama Media Group, of the company’s latest award. “We are also always grateful to all of the courageous people across the country who shared their stories during this project to help bring about the change. They are the reason we do this work.

The year-long investigation began with AL.com reporter and editor Challen Stephens investigates violent encounters involving a police dog and his handler in a small town in Alabama.

AL.com Journalist Ashley Remkus and photographer Joe Songer also worked on the project which included creating a one-of-a-kind database of incidents where police dogs caused serious injuries while attacking suspects.

Realizing that the problem was not limited to Alabama, AL.com reached out to The Marshall project to broaden the investigation. The two organizations have also worked with Indianapolis Star and Invisible Institute, who were examining the K-9 issues in Indiana.

The project was also a finalist for the 2021 Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting by the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy at Harvard Kennedy School.
