To date, Qatari learners on Coursera have reached 100,000. Now the company is looking to increase the number even more.

Massive online course provider Coursera, based in the United States, is “in talks” with the Qatar Foundation (QF) to integrate its platform to help students gain wider access to online content.

The company’s CEO, Jeff Maggioncalda, revealed to The Peninsula that discussions are underway with QF’s eight universities regarding the possibility of introducing the platform to “virtually bring universities and industry together”.

“The vision is to connect students to jobs, that’s what’s going to be exciting about integrating the Coursera platform into universities. It’s not just about building skills, but connecting students to good entry-level jobs for employers in the region,” he added.

Despite the announcement, nothing concrete has yet been between the two parties.

The CEO also praised Qatar for its investments in education, saying the country has invested heavily to “bring early childhood education and some of the most innovative higher education to this region.”

According to him, e-learning is the future of higher education, and Qatar can embrace such an educational revolution.

Although e-learning is not a newly introduced concept, the idea has definitely undergone further reform since the outbreak of the pandemic in 2020. Its obvious advantages, such as increased flexibility, greater convenience and l access to cutting-edge learning methodologies and technologies, puts all concerns about its effectiveness to rest.

At least ten companies in Qatar are currently using Coursera, which helps improve the skills of staff members, including Al Jazeera Media, Qatar Investment Group and Ooredoo. Additionally, over 100,000 Qatari students are enrolled in Coursera, most of whom are around 35 years old.

According to the official, the top three courses Qataris enroll in are Wellness Science from Yale University, English for Career Development from the University of Pennsylvania, and Data Foundations from Google.

“These are all pretty much business-oriented courses, I think business people in Qatar use Coursera the most,” Maggioncalda said, adding that the student growth rate is 28% per year, which which is higher than the world average.

One of the many reasons the company is looking to introduce online courses to universities is to prove the importance of blended learning. Such opportunities would allow students to receive an abundance of course options that may not be available on campus.

“That’s why we talk to the Qatar Foundation. Many universities today are integrating online learning into the on-campus experience – so you get both; students on campus can also complete online projects even as part of their residential experience. So I think the mix, the hybrid type of education will be very valuable for many students,” he told The Peninsula.

Maggioncalda said that although the decision to include Qatari universities in the Coursera platform has not yet been made, they look forward to cooperating with regional colleges and universities.

“At the moment, we are dealing with the consumer, the 100,000 Qataris directly registered on our site. We work with 10 companies, and I think the next step is to work with universities. This is something we hope to be able to announce very soon.

Tuesday, January 25, will mark the 10th annual publication of US News’ Online Curriculum Rankings. As always, these rankings assess offers whose core business is mainly accessible to distance learners.

We don’t know exactly how many of these programs exist in the United States. We can only count those who choose to participate in our surveys, which we believe reflect the majority of dedicated online programs, but certainly not all. While the number of schools we were able to rank over time has grown significantly, this could be due to the overall growth in online education as well as interest in our rankings.

The inaugural 2013 edition featured 237 online (completion) licensing programs that were reported to US News. The upcoming edition will have 381; in addition, for the second year, there will be subject-specific undergraduate rankings in business and psychology.

Why the increase? There is no doubt that the rankings of US News are better known, especially compared to previous years. But perhaps improvements in online course delivery and student access to technology have prompted more schools to offer these programs, which has had the reciprocal effect of gaining credibility with employers. . This credibility is leading to increased demand for flexible offerings – and has caused some brick-and-mortar programs struggling with enrollment to retrain into online degree programs.

In total, the next edition assessed 1,728 active online programs for 2021-2022 across the seven master’s ranks in Criminal Justice, Education, Engineering, Information Technology, MBA, Non-MBA Business, and Nursing; plus the general baccalaureate classification. This is an increase of almost 8% from the 1,605 programs that participated in these same areas for the 2021 edition, and the growth has been distributed relatively evenly across the different subjects.

For comparison, the 2021 edition saw a 2% increase in schedules, which was more typical of recent years. We will see if the accelerated interest in this modality continues following the recent meteoric disruption in higher education.

Either way, we will continue to produce these rankings, both those intended for the general public and those designed specifically for veterans and active service members. Our goal, as it has been for the past 10 years, is to help prospective students research which online programs are strongest in terms of academics, course delivery, support services, and training. affordability. To do this, we look beyond the reputation of parent institutions to help students discover where they can have the best experiences.

For the 2020 and 2021 promotions:

When the pandemic was only in its first months, we wrote an open letter to the Class of 2020 in which we celebrated your resilience, sadly acknowledged that you would not experience traditional rituals of in-person debut you’ve been waiting for, and put the best face we can on the Zoom and YouTube alternatives we’ve been preparing for you.

In this letter, we also all found comfort in what we called the University’s “firm promise” to have you back. The gathering “will be all the sweeter, all the more significant”, we promised then, “to have been postponed”.

At that point, in our naivety, none of us expected that not just the Class of 2020, but also the Class to follow – the Class of 2021 – would end up having their senior year start experience postponed. . And yet, that is what happened. Classes of 2020 and 2021, you together share the distinction of having attended – and graduated from – Harvard College during a historic pandemic.

In the decades to come, when you gather for meetings on campus, you will all be at the center of panels and roundtables. The student journalists of the future will ask you for interviews. They will want to know: How was it?

And you will have such varied stories. Some of your stories may be difficult to hear: they will describe experiences of anxiety, illness, grief, and missed opportunities. Some may also carry a tinge of anger, as you describe to these future generations all the things you think Harvard should have done differently.

Other stories will be more philosophical. They will focus on how, even though your experience on the Harvard campus was cut short, your life expanded in other areas: you deepened relationships with family, you took responsibility for maintenance of a home for the first time, you have rethought your priorities and life paths, you have discovered new regions of the country and even of the world.

Yet other stories some of you will tell, especially members of the Class of 2021, will delight future generations as you describe what it was like – as vaccines were rolled out but the pandemic persisted – to to be invited back into a much changed world. campus for your last spring semester: the particularity of attending online classes from your rooms, take-out meals, tests three times a week, universal wearing of a mask, the experience of a social life of House which had now largely rotated from Zoom to the outside (often cold).

Over the last few weeks of this semester, the Houses have invested a lot of effort in finding ways to give you all an unforgettable start. On the day of the Beginning itself, we recognized you, toasted you and celebrated online. But we knew, Class of 2021, that none of this could quite make up for the disappointment you felt, given the reality that you – like the class before you – would not experience a beginning in person.

But now you both come back! It’s finally your time for dresses, mortars, speeches, pipers, marching bands, swing bands, last chance dances and champagne toasts. Harvard – and all of us – are all dressed up and waiting for you. Welcome back, promotions 2020 and 2021! The hour of our long-awaited reunion has finally arrived.

Anne Harrington is Chair of Deans of Faculty at Harvard College and Dean of Faculty at Pforzheimer House.

This letter was written, edited and submitted by the Deans of the Twelve House Faculties and the Resident Dean of the Dudley Community.

Cessna 140 crash during MayDay STOL event in Wayne, Nebraska

On May 20, 2022, a Cessna 140 crashed during the MayDay STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) event held this weekend in Wayne, Nebraska. No one on the ground was injured. Unfortunately, pilot Tom Dafoe, the sole occupant of the aircraft, died in the crash. The winds were too strong that day to hold the STOL Drag competition, a test of speed and accuracy measured by combined take-off and landing time and distance. Dafoe and other pilots decided to do a traditional STOL demonstration where pilots fly a typical box model keeping the takeoff and landing distance as short as possible.

It appeared that Dafoe’s Cessna 140 had made an S-turn to space out behind a Zenith 701 to compensate for the Cessna’s faster speed resulting in a stall/spin accident. This accident should remind us to have a plan B in mind when we are closely spaced behind a slower moving aircraft, such as stopping and performing a go-around. STOL events are fun and exciting, bringing people together in aviation and we want to make sure we can continue to enjoy these events. This unfortunate accident provides lessons to help all pilots protect themselves against a stall/spin accident.

In First analysis: N76075the AOPA Air Safety Institute is conducting a preliminary assessment of the crash, addressing notable parts of the tragic flight and highlighting areas the NTSB will likely investigate to determine probable cause.

Before being renamed King Arts, the school in the heart of Evanston’s Fifth Ward was known as Foster Elementary.

When it opened in 1905, Foster’s faculty and student body were nearly all white.

But the big houses this white businessman was building near Lake Michigan needed domestic workers. This demand, combined with the ability to own land in relatively bucolic surroundings, caused the city’s black population to swell to over 2,500 people, who lived in pocket communities scattered around the city.

In 1921, white leaders in Evanston responded by passing a zoning ordinance that forced hundreds of these black families to relocate. Developers inserted restrictive covenants into property deeds in predominantly white areas stating that homes “not to be deeded, leased, or occupied by anyone who is non-white in race (except servants).” Banks refused to lend money to black families looking for homes.

The Fifth Ward, covering a small triangle of land around Foster that was bounded by railroad tracks to the east and a sewer to the west, became the only viable location for most black Evanstonians.

By the end of World War II, Foster’s student body was 99% black.

That was still the case when DarLisa Himrod’s relatives arrived from South Carolina in the mid-1950s. Like many current and former residents of the Fifth Ward, the Widemans remember life in the segregated all-black neighborhood with mixed emotions.

Thanks to indignities such as second-hand textbooks, neighborhood children have derided the crimson-brick Foster Building as “Red Rock Jail.”

But those same kids could walk to school in the morning, come home for lunch, and be back in time for afternoon classes. And black teachers had worked at the school since 1942.

“I always wanted to teach because I had great teachers at Foster,” said Himrod’s mother, Phyllis Wideman-Pickett, who would eventually land a teaching position in the physical education department at Evanston Township High.

It was the fall of 1977 when DarLisa started kindergarten. At that time, “Red Rock Prison” no longer housed Foster Elementary. Instead, it was home to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Laboratory School, the pride of a former progressive white District 65 superintendent named Gregory Coffin, and many of Evanston’s leading black educators.

After being hired in 1966, Coffin had quickly put in place an extensive plan to desegregate the city’s elementary schools. Each school is said to have a student body that is between 17 and 25 percent black. To get there, Coffin shut down Foster, then began kicking about 450 black children out of the Fifth Ward every morning.

The plan was “not entirely fair”, the superintendent later acknowledged.

So, as compensation, he set up the new “laboratory school” in the old Foster building, instituted a lottery system open to black families in the surrounding community, and filled the school with amenities.

However, perhaps the most ambitious part of Coffin’s plan was how he wanted to train Evanston’s teachers to work in their new coeducational classrooms. During the summers of 1967 and 1968, the superintendent organized an “Integration Institute”. A forerunner of the diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives that later became ubiquitous in teacher education programs, the Institute aimed to help participants address “the things that teachers do unintentionally that can perpetuate odious racial distinctions”.

Experts such as historian John Hope Franklin gave public lectures and then worked with District 65 staff to develop a set of step-by-step instruction manuals for teachers. Topics included “Standards of Discipline in Inclusive Schools” and “Black Power and Its Effects on Racial Interaction.”

Remembering his white teacher more than 40 years later, Himrod could still taste the fruits of Coffin’s efforts.

“She was simply the sweetest, kindest woman you’ve ever laid eyes on,” she said. “I always had to go to the staff room with her. Her favorite drink was the Tab, and she bought me one too. Hell, I used to think I was something sitting there drinking my Tab in the staff room.

Unfortunately, such interactions were atypical.

In 1971, the Educational Testing Service published an assessment of the Coffin desegregation initiative. Racial disparities in student academic achievement have remained unchanged. Worse still, the mostly white teachers in the newly integrated Evanston classrooms were twice as likely to refer boys in their classes who were black to the school psychologist than the mostly black teachers in Foster had been. And most alarming of all were the results of an extensive survey of 408 teachers in District 65, who viewed the black children in their care as more hostile, aggressive and indifferent than their white classmates.

For decades, the K-12 field would remain stubbornly focused on trying to change the attitudes and racial biases of white educators, said Niral Shah, associate professor of education at the University of Washington. But an avalanche of research now clearly shows that these efforts have failed.

“The dominant logic model — that racial consciousness must change before anti-racist practice is possible — is not supported by the literature,” Shah concluded in a 2021 white paper. for the Spencer Foundation.

This logic model also did not work in Evanston after desegregation.

Superintendent Coffin’s contract was not renewed in 1970, sparking huge controversy in the city that led to protests and clashes for nearly a year before a contentious school board election cemented his fate.

By the end of the decade, District 65 had closed the “Red Rock Jail”. and moved the academic program now known as King Arts to its current location. The move further diluted the strength of Foster’s former black faculty, which was part of a national pattern after the 1954 Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education.

The K-12 system’s current difficulties in recruiting and retaining black teachers “did not happen by accident,” said Sharif El-Mekki, founder and CEO of the Center for Black Educator Development. “Policy makers need to understand history. Up to 40,000 black educators have been fired, fired or otherwise disrespected.

In college, most of the black adults DarLisa Himrod had regular contact with at King Arts worked in the nursing suite and cafeteria.

And at Evanston Township High, a white teacher passed her over for a spot on the student council that hosted the annual talent show, despite Himrod’s three years of dedicated preparation.

“I thought if I did the right things, knew the right people, was a go-getter, I would be a shoo-in, because they have to at least look like they have black people there,” says -she. “That’s when my eyes started to get a little clearer.”
