“I have to believe that a world where there is a version of Instagram designed for tweens – a world where there is no advertising, where there is age appropriate content, one where a parent can choosing to allow your child to use it and control things like who they follow and who they send messages to – better than the alternative, â€he said.

The announcement comes as Instagram’s parent company, Facebook, is due to testify later this week at a Senate hearing on the safety and mental well-being of children online.

It comes on the heels of a multi-part in-depth investigation by the Wall Street Journal which reported on how Facebook internally deals with the negative effects of its products on users. This Journal series included coverage of an internal Facebook report suggesting the company was downplaying the damage Instagram caused to teenage girls.

The company recently attempted to undermine the Journal’s findings and counter perceptions that social media platforms are detrimental to the mental health of their users.

Mosseri said Instagram is working on other features to improve user experience on the platform, including “getting” people to explore other topics if they seem to dwell on a potentially negative topic. and allow people to pause their accounts.

“If someone leaves Instagram feeling bad about themselves, it’s an important issue we need to take seriously [and] that we have to find a way to fix it, â€he said.
