Tirupati: The new academic year for upper intermediate students began on Monday with the start of online courses. The Board of Intermediate Education has published an academic calendar for the year with 213 working days.

As the impact of the second wave of Covid continues and amid threats of a possible third wave, the government has decided to reopen educational institutions from August 16. In the meantime, online courses will continue for upper intermediate students.

Officials have made arrangements to hold online courses. As 48,755 students paid the exam fee in the district to attend the junior intermediate exams, all are considered passed following the government decision. As such, all will now be second year students.

Regional Inspector V Srinivasulu Reddy told The Hans India that all staff are required to attend colleges during working hours and teach students online on the prescribed schedule.

They will form WhatsApp groups with the students and give them a username and password as well as the timetable. Students must attend classes within the respective hours.

Speakers must motivate them to ensure maximum participation. However, on the first day, the RIO, the Joint Regional Director and the District Vocational Education Officer held a zoom meeting and gave all the instructions to the staff. They were asked to prepare schedules and conduct only a few classes for which 34 to 37 percent attendance was reported.

The RIO has made it clear that no college should conduct offline courses until further instructions are given by the government. Junior colleges under various branches are only to offer online courses from now on.
